Yerevan Calling Quartet

АРТЕМ МАНУКЯН

Лидер квартета Артем Манукян обосновался на профессиональной джазовой сцене еще будучи студентом Ереванской государственной консерватории по классу виолончели. Он увлекался джазом с детства, начинал басистом детского джаз-коллектива «Pokr Jazz». Затем играл в различных джазовых составах Еревана и, наконец, попал в именитую, объездившую всю Европу, армянскую world music команду мечты Armenian Navy Band, ведомую обладателем ГРЭММИ перкуссионистом и певцом Арто Тунчбояджяном. В качестве его басиста он стал обладателем the BBC-3 World Music Award и записал 3 альбома.

В 2008 году он был отобран американской стороной для участия в Summer School Program Бостонского музыкального колледжа Беркли.

На его счету запись саундтреков к фильмам «Hannibal», «Dear White People», «Cartel Land», «Zipper», «Central Intelligence», «Geostorm», «Birth of a Dragon», «Luke Cage». А в оскароносном фильме «Green Book» он исполняет все солирующие виолончельные партии саундтрека.

Затем в судьбе Артема был этно-джаз-рок септет «Katuner», в составе которого он стал победителем конкурса «Усадьба. Джаз» в Москве. На обоих альбомах группы он выступал в качестве как басиста, так и виолончелиста.

В 2010 году он переезжает в США, где выступает и записывается со многими звездами рок, поп и джаз-музыки – Дэрилом “DMC” МакДаниэльсом из группы Run-D.M.C., обладателем латин-грэмми рок-певцом Драко Роса, бэнд-лидером Серджио Мендесом, барабанщиком Питером Эрскиным, саксофонистом Камаси Вашингтоном, трубачом Хербом Альбертом, барабанщиком Вирджилом Донати, пианистом Тиграном Амасяном, певицами Мелоди Гардо и Гретчен Парлато. Альбом «Flor» (2022) последней, в котором Артем является участником трио, был номинирован на ГРЭММИ.

В 2016 году Артем Манукян был приглашен принять участие в New Direction Cello Festival.

Сегодня на счету музыканта 3 сольных альбома – «Citizen», «Alone» и «Rap-etoire». Если первый – электро-фьюжн, то второй – виолончель-соло, ну, а третий – воплощение мечты юношества – хип-хоп.

В 2022 году Артем Манукян возвращается на родину и активно вливается в музыкальную жизнь города. Играет в качестве солиста в разных коллективах, а в настоящее время руководит собственным квартетом Yerevan Calling. Ансамбль исполняет исключительно авторские авангард-фьюжн и фанк композиции. В ближайших планах коллектива музыкально-социальный проект по организации регулярных концертов в Армении, направленных на популяризацию джаза в республике, привлечение внимания к проблемам общественной жизни и сбор средств на восстановление исторических мест столицы Армении.

АРМАН ПЕШТМАЛДЖЯН

Арман Пештмалджян - выпускник Ереванской госконсерватории. Периодически приглашается в разные коллективы. Несколько лет тому назад стал постоянным участником, клавишником и аранжировщиком этно-джаз группы "MVF". Периодически выступает с Гос- джаз оркестром Армении. В последнее время часто играет с созданным им самим квинтетом. Автор многочисленных произведений, которые с успехом звучат на армянской и не только, джазовых сценах. Участник многих международных фестивалей в Армении, США, Китае и Грузии.

АРМАН МАЦАКАНЯН

Арман Мнацаканян в 2021 году закончил Ереванскую гос. консерваторию. В студенческие годы он принял участие в Summer Program of the Berklee College of Music. Работал в качестве перкуссиониста на классических ударных инструментах в оркестре Национального театра оперы и балета, был основным барабанщиком в Госджаз оркестре Армении. Принимал участие в различных фестивалях. В настоящее время является ударником на постоянной основе в составах «Hip NoyZ», «Armenian Navy Band», «Decentralized», «Yerevan Calling». Обладает широким музыкальным кругозором, фантастической техникой, способен играть в любой манере и стилистике.

КАРЕН МАМИКОНЯН

Пианист и композитор Карен Мамиконян известен в джазовом обществе Армении уже около 20 лет. Любителям джаза он известен как постоянный клавишник разноплановых джаз-коллективов Армении - Kind of Trio, New Quintet, The Birds, Dialog Project, Silence Duo, Acoustic Colors, а также своими работами с исполнителями других жанров.

Карен Мамиконян принимал участие в ряде международных джазовых фестивалей, в том числе JAM, InterYerevan Fest, Kavkaz Jazz Festival, EverJazz, Dubai Jazz Fest. Среди своих коллег армянской джазовой сцены он выделяется особым стилем, создавая и исполняя композиции в стилистиках модерн и авангард джаза c элементами классической музыки.

ARTYOM MANUKYAN

The leader of the Quartet Artyom Manukyan first made his name being the student of the cello department of Yerevan State Conservatory. He played in many jazz ensembles, starting with children’s «Pokr Jazz», continued in the youth ethno-jazz-rock septet «Katuner» and finally traveled the world as the youngest member of the BBC-3 World Music Award-winning «Armenian Navy Band» run by the world-known vocalist and percussionist Grammy Award Winner Arto Tuncboyaciyan. Artyom recorded 3 albums with it, playing bass as well as cello.

In 2008 he was chosen by the Boston professor to spend 2 months at the Berklee College of Music for the Summer School Program.

Since moving to Los Angeles in 2010, Artyom has been in demand as a session musician and soundtrack composer (Hannibal season 2, Dear White People season 2, Cartel Land, Zipper, Central Intelligence, Geostorm, Birth of a Dragon, Luke Cage).

Artyom is equally at home on the stages of jazz clubs, concert halls and rock festivals, performing with major international artists including Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run-D.M.C., Grammy-winning Latin alternative rocker Draco Rosa, Natasha Bedingfield, Everlast, Daedalus, Flying Lotus, Tigran Hamasyan, recorded with Hadrien Feraud, Sergio Mendes, Herb Alpert, Virgil Donati, Peter Erskine, Kamasi Washington, Melody Gardot, Gretchen Parlato and many more. Artyom also performs on TV shows including Dr. Phil and Jimmy Kimmel Live where he joined Coldplay, Bono and Odesza for performances. Artyom also was a Guest Artist at the 2016 New Direction Cello Festival. He performed at the MTV Awards Ceremony accompanying Halsey.

One should mention two successful projects he participated in. First is his recording in the soundtrack of the Oscar Winning movie «Green Book» in which he performed all cello solos. The second is the Grammy nomination of the singer Gretchen Parlato’s album “Flor” (2022).

Artyom’s genre-defying approach to playing the cello like a bass emerged from a combination of his conservatory training and exposure to the music of hallmark jazz bassists including Jaco Pastorius and Marcus Miller.

After the success of his debut solo album, “Citizen”, Artyom toured and worked on two albums which were released in 2018. First is a collaborative album with French electro jazz producer, Dawatile Kiledjian, titled “HILA”. The second is a solo album titled “Alone”. Following his youth preferences, he composed and recorded his third album «Rap-etoire», in which he acts as rapper.

In his free time, Artyom teaches private lessons and was an invited guest teacher at the world-renowned Tumo Center for Creative Technologies.

In 2022 Artyom returned to his motherland and actively entered the musical life of the city. He plays in different collectives and formed his own Yerevan Calling Quartet. They play their own avant-garde-fusion and funk compositions. Quartet has performed already at several big International Jazz Festivals. The nearest plan of the band is a new project. The Quartet is ready to play a regular series of concerts in Armenia, aiming the popularization of jazz art in the Republic, drawing attention of the society to the social problems and fund raising for the restoration of the historical places in the capital of Armenia.

ARMAN PESHTMALJYAN

Arman Peshtmaljyan is a graduate of the Yerevan State Conservatory. He frequently is invited to take part in various projects. Several years ago he became the constant member, keyboardist and arranger of the ethno-jazz group of the "MVF". Periodically he performs with the State Jazz Orchestra of Armenia. Recently Arman started his own quintet. He is the author of the numerous jazz and not only compositions, which are successfully performed by Armenian and foreign artists. He is a participant of the many International Jazz Festivals in Armenian, Georgia, China and the US.

ARMAN MNATSAKANYAN

Arman Mnatsakanyan graduated from the Yerevan State Conservatory in 2021. In his student years he took part in the Summer Program of the Berklee College of Music. Worked as percussionist at the classical percussion instruments at the National Opera and Ballet Theater, as well as main drummer at the State Jazz Orchestra of Armenia. Take part in various International Jazz Festivals. At preset he is the leading drummer in several groups - «Hip NoyZ», «Armenian Navy Band», «Decentralized», «Yerevan Calling» and Tigran Hamasyan Trio. He is possessed of the most vide musical horizon and is broad-minded person in musical sphere. Having fantastic personal technique he is able to play in any manner and stylistics.

Karen Mamikonyan

Piano player and composer Karen Mamikonyan is widely known in Armenian jazz society for more than 20 years. Jazz fans know him as the permanent keyboardist of the various multi-faceted Armenian jazz groups - Kind of Trio, New Quintet, The Birds, Dialog Project, Silence Duo, Acoustic Colors, as well as his collaborations with the artists of other genres.

Karen Mamikonyan took part in the big row of the International Jazz Festivals and events, including JAM, InterYerevan Jazz Fest, Kavkaz Jazz Festival, EverJazz Festival, Dubai Jazz Fest, What A Wonderful World… Among his Armenian colleagues he is distinguished by his peculiar style and manner creating and performing compositions in modern, contemporary and avant-garde jazz with the elements of classical music.
